Cybercrooks and the people who track them have their own way of speaking. Let's find out what their vocabulary means.
- HACKER (HAK-ur)-a skilled programmer who breaks into computer networks. Some do it for fun or to test how secure those systems are. Others, sometimes called crackers, have criminal motives. This blog uses the term hacker for anyone who invades computer systems - whether their motives are good or bad.*The cops released the hacker who broke into our company network. They said she did it just to show that we need a better firewall.*
- FIREWALL (FYRE-wahl)- an electronic barrier that keeps out hackers.
- VIRUS (VYE-rus)- a destructive program that infects people's computers without their knowledge. It's spreads by attaching itself to emails or files that are sent from one computer to another.*If virus gets into our computers, we could lose a lot of important data.*
- WORM (wurm)- a nasty program that slows or shuts down computers. It spreads quickly through networks by copying itself again and again.
- CYBERTERRORISM (SYE-bur-TAIR-ur-izm)- an attack on the computer networks that control power plants and other large system.*An act of cyberterrorism could cause a major blackout.*
- ZOMBIES (ZOM-beez)- computers that have been taken over by hackers. The hackers can control zombies without the computer owners' knowledge.*They used a lot of zombies to attack their target.*
- TROJAN HORSE (TRO-jun hors)- a program that looks like useful software but really contains a virus or other harmful program.*The free online game was really a Trojan horse, and the virus hidden inside it damaged his system.*
- SCRIPT KIDDIE (skript KID-ee)
- an inexperienced or unskilled hacker who uses programs written by someone else break into computer systems.
